    2024-08-17

The team of guest editors for this special issue, Drs. Monica Swahn, Sawitri Assanangkornchai, Eva Braaten, Joel Francis and Sebastián Peña, in collaboration with the Co-Editors-in-Chief, Drs. Anne-Marie Laslett and Neo Morojele, are pleased to announce the release of the Special Issue on Alcohol prevention research and policy development in LMICs: New perspectives, insights and recommendations  (Part 2) of the International Journal of Alcohol and Drug Research (IJADR).

We particularly encouraged submissions that address the unique challenges and opportunities facing low-resource settings, where limited infrastructure, funding, and political will may pose barriers to alcohol prevention efforts but where the burden of alcohol harm tends to be very high.

By creating this dedicated space for rigorous inquiry and dialogue, this issue will hopefully generate actionable insights and evidence-based recommendations for advancing alcohol prevention efforts in low-resource settings. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing, we can work towards a future where all individuals and communities have equitable access to resources and support for reducing alcohol-related harm.

The team of guest editors for this special issue, Drs. Monica Swahn, Sawitri Assanangkornchai, Eva Braaten, Joel Francis and Sebastián Peña, in collaboration with the Co-Editors-in-Chief, Drs. Anne-Marie Laslett and Neo Morojele, are pleased to announce the release of the Special Issue on Alcohol Prevention Research and Policy Development in LMICs: Facilitating Partnerships, Capacity and Impact (Part 1) of the International Journal of Alcohol and Drug Research (IJADR).  This special issue, part 1, is centered on the recent momentum in alcohol policy development and capacity building, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), which has led to significant advancements through new tools, initiatives, and resources.

This special issue includes nine manuscripts addressing various issues related to alcohol policy development, evaluation and advocacy in LMICs. Key themes include the support for LMICs through initiatives like the RESET Initiative, rising alcohol consumption trends in emerging economies, the crucial role of civil society in policy development, gaps in policy implementation in countries like Thailand, intersectoral strategies in Chile, and the influence of the alcohol industry in the Philippines and Singapore. Several of the papers also highlight various advocacy efforts and lessons learned and are authored and described by the very advocates and practitioners on the ground, pushing these movements forward. As such, we hope that this collection of articles will present very useful insight into alcohol advocacy efforts and policy implementation. Please take a look at these intriguing articles.

We would also like to acknowledge the generous financial support by FORUT and Movendi for this special issue which facilitated authors from LMICs to publish their work.

The Co-Editors-in-Chief, Associate Professor Anne-Marie Laslett and Professor Neo Morojele and are pleased to announce the release of the first issue of Volume 12 of the International Journal of Alcohol and Drug Research (IJADR). This first regular issue for 2024 consists of four diverse papers. The first two are about the ways in which COVID-19 impacted our lives and the ways in which we responded, focusing on aspects of both industry and treatment service reactions. The third paper is grimly topical in Australia, focusing on alcohol-related intimate partner violence — finding more harm was reported by women than men from an intimate partner who was intoxicated.  The final paper in this issue draws attention to alcohol consumption and its contribution to workplace health problems in informal workplaces in Nigeria. Interviewing informal automobile artisans, this paper describes range of heavy drinking practices and workplace injuries and illnesses.

We encourage you to read these papers and those we are co-publishing in our two-part Special Issue: Alcohol Prevention Research and Policy Development in LMICs: Facilitating Partnerships, Capacity and Impact, and those in our the inaugural KBS 2023 Annual Symposium Issue which will become a regular feature and issue in IJADR. Please consider submitting your articles from the 2024 KBS symposium! Of course, submissions to our regular issues on social and epidemiological research on alcohol and other drugs, that foster comparative understanding of substance use and substance problems, are always welcome

The Co-Editors-in-Chief, Professor Neo Morojele and Associate Professor Anne-Marie Laslett are pleased to announce the release of the second issue of Volume 11 of the International Journal of Alcohol and Drug Research (IJADR). The second and final issue for 2023 consists of papers all of which concern the theme of alcohol surveys. The focus  of  the first  paper is  on  methodological  issues pertaining to a survey on alcohol’s harms to others which originated in Australia. The remaining papers describe  studies  which used surveys to  measure predictors  and patterns  of  alcohol  consumption in South Africa; patterns of alcohol consumption during the COVID-19  pandemic  in  Switzerland;  and patterns  of  alcohol  consumption  and  drunk-driving  related harm in Tanzania. The  papers  involve studies  conducted  in  diverse settings,  and  in  this issue they include both  high-income (Australia   and   Switzerland)   and   middle-income   (South Africa and Tanzania) countries.

As mentioned in our Editorial we are continuing to work towards the production of our Special Issue in 2023, with the theme of: Alcohol Prevention Research and Policy Development in LMICs: Facilitating Partnerships, Capacity and Impact.  Our second Special issue is the inaugural “KBS 2023 Annual Symposium Issue”. We hope it will become a tradition for IJADR to publish an issue dedicated to papers presented at each annual KBS Symposium. We have extended the deadline for submitting your articles from the 2023 KBS symposium to 26 January 2024.

We continue to seek submissions to IJADR for our regular issue to publish and promote social and epidemiological research on alcohol and other drugs, and foster comparative understanding of substance use and substance problems.

The Co-Editors-in-Chief, Associate Professor Anne-Marie Laslett and Professor Neo Morojele are pleased to announce the release of the first issue of Volume 11 of the International Journal of Alcohol and Drug Research (IJADR). In the first issue for 2023, we include a large global review of the effects of alcohol consumption on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and a European-based review of the effects of COVID-19 on drinking. Two studies from Singapore and Thailand round out this issue, detailing COVID-19’s effects on drinking, smoking and stress, and analysing the links between alcohol marketing and consumption, respectively.

As mentioned in our Editorial we are continuing to work towards the production of our Special Issue in 2023, with the theme of: Alcohol Prevention Research and Policy Development in LMICs: Facilitating Partnerships, Capacity and Impact. We welcome interdisciplinary, theoretical, qualitative and quantitative research papers as well as commentaries and reviews. By reviews we mean literature reviews, policy reviews or potentially commentaries or reviews of evidence or policy.

Of course, we continue to seek submissions to IJADR for our regular issue to publish and promote social and epidemiological research on alcohol and other drugs and foster comparative understanding of substance use and substance problems.

The Co-Editors-in-Chief, Professor Neo Morojele and Dr Anne-Marie Laslett are pleased to announce the release of the first issue of Volume 10 of the International Journal of Alcohol and Drug Research (IJADR).

The good news is that the IJADR was ratified as the official journal of the Kettil  Bruun  Society  for  Social  and  Epidemiological Research  on  Alcohol  (KBS).  The journal’s   ongoing relationship with KBS  was  formalized  in  the by-laws  and  we  thank KBS for their financial and advisory support in 2022.

Unfortunately submissions declined in 2022, and we were only able to produce a single issue, with four papers  that included  authors  from Australia,  Brazil,  Canada, China,   Finland, India,   Italy,   Mexico,   Nigeria,   South Africa, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, the United States of America (USA) and Viet Nam. The papers presented research on (a) how a history  of childhood neglect results in differential ratings of stress, affect, and  desire to  drink, during typical alcohol consumption sessions in moderate to heavy drinkers in the USA; (b) a study  of  problematic  alcohol  consumption,  knowledge about drinking limits and health risks among future health professionals in Tanzania;   (c) improved  estimates of individual  and  population-level alcohol use in the United States,1984–2020 and (d) a detailed discussion paper on a potential research  agenda  for  alcohol  policymaking  in  the  wider world. Alcohol continued to be consumed during the COVID-19 pandemic across the world, and in some cases in greater volumes and with more negative effects. These papers all  focused on the consumption of alcohol.

Finally we are pleased to announce that we are busy putting a Special Issue together in 2023, with the theme of: Alcohol Prevention Research and Policy Development in LMICs: Facilitating Partnerships, Capacity and Impact. We welcome interdisciplinary, theoretical, qualitative and quantitative research papers as well as commentaries and reviews. By reviews we mean literature reviews, policy reviews or potentially commentaries or reviews of evidence or policy.

The Co-Editors-in-Chief, Professor Neo Morojele and Dr Anne-Marie Laslett are pleased to announce the release of the first issue of the 9th volume of the International Journal of Alcohol and Drug Research (IJADR).

This issue includes authors from non-English speaking, low- and middle-income countries (Turkey, Russia) and early career researchers (Australia). We would like to highlight the article by Hughes et al. (2021) that showcases the longest running longitudinal study of sexual minority women in the world, released at the end of Pride Month. In general, we would characterise this international issue by saying that it focuses on measurement of alcohol use, alcohol problems and the costs societies bear in terms of alcohol’s use and harm.

Newsbreak: At the recent online 46th Annual Alcohol Epidemiology Symposium of the Kettil Bruun Society organised by our dear colleagues in Helsinki, a strong majority decision was taken by the membership at the Annual Business Meeting to confirm IJADR’s position as the journal of the Society.  Additional financial support was also pledged to support publication by authors from low- and middle-income countries. We would like to thank the Kettil Bruun Society (KBS) for taking this decision and look forward to working more closely with the KBS Coordinating Committee. Together we hope to ensure that our aligned mission, to support international and collaborative research and its publication, is advanced.

We hope you find these papers inspiring and look forward to receiving more research articles, reviews, commentaries, ideas for special issues, and other papers on social and epidemiological research concerning any of the full range of addictive substances from across the globe. IJADR aims to ensure that our authorship, readership and editorial team are diverse and inclusive.  We also strive to improve the relatively limited geographical and gender representation in the field of alcohol and other drug research and hope you will join us in this important mission. Please do not forget that fees for papers from LMIC are waived and requests from early career researchers for fee relief are considered on a case-by-case basis.

This issue is the second issue to have been jointly managed by the new Co-Editors-in-Chief: Professor Neo Morojele from South Africa, and Dr Anne-Marie Laslett from Australia (see our editorial).

The issue content includes authors from Scandinavia and North America and studies from Canada, Sri Lanka, Germany and the United States. We cover a wide range of topics, with articles on the burden of disease in North America, pricing elasticity in Sri Lanka, the protective effect of marriage on substance use by sexual identity status in the US, a study of techniques that assist qualitative researchers to determine their subjectivity in Germany and a multi-level analysis of factors affecting early adolescents’ alcohol use.

We hope you find these papers inspiring and look forward to receiving more research articles, reviews, commentaries, ideas for special issues, and other papers on social and epidemiological research concerning any of the full range of addictive substances from across the globe. With IJADR we strive to improve the relatively limited geographical and gender representation of the field of alcohol and other drug research and hope you will join us in this important mission.
